SERVICES SERVICES SERVICES

The X times Y game

Here is an imaginary scenario:

What if your employer suddenly told you that you were going to be paid a thousand dollars per hour? You would be thrilled; excited beyond belief. What if he then said your hours would be cut back to one per year? Your excitement would quickly disappear.

It’s the X times Y game. Simple math. X times Y will always equal Z.

How about a real scenario this time.

Your current salary is $12,693. Your employer, the symphony, has announced that you’ll be getting a 15% increase in your service (hourly) rate – hooray!

But look out! You’ll only have 43 work services! OUCH!

Let’s see how that works in the X times Y game….

The new service rate is $72.64.

$72.64 times 43 equals….$3,123.52.

Wait a minute! That sure doesn’t seem like you’ll be making more money, does it?

You were making $12, 693 but now you’ll be making $3,123.

The symphony has said you’re getting an increase. The symphony has said its “misleading” to call this a 75% cut. (Got us there! It’s actually a 75.3% cut!)

So this is the X times Y game. What do you think?

What do you think WE think?

Here is our position.
